Applications Open in Cyprus for Citizenship Exam
Applications for the citizenship and long-term residency exam in the Republic of Cyprus will be accepted from May 21 to June 3. The exam itself will take place on July 5.
According to the Ministry of Education, the exam will focus on the "political and social reality of Cyprus." Applicants are strongly encouraged to use official materials provided by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism to guide their preparation. These materials cover essential information such as the island’s official population figures, governance structure, and the Cyprus issue.
The exam will be held exclusively in Greek. Those applying for long-term residency must independently demonstrate at least A2-level proficiency in Greek. Citizenship applicants—excluding highly qualified professionals—must prove B1-level proficiency in the language.
The examination fee is €20, payable online via the JCC Smart platform.
It’s worth noting that naturalization requirements in Cyprus changed last year. All applicants must have resided legally and continuously in the country for 12 months immediately before submitting their citizenship application. Previously, applicants could not leave Cyprus during this period. Under the new rules, absences of up to 90 days no longer break the continuity of residence.
In addition, applicants must have lived legally in the Republic of Cyprus for a cumulative total of at least seven years within the last 10 years prior to that 12-month period. They must also show they have suitable housing and stable, regular income sufficient to support themselves and their family members. Applicants are also expected to demonstrate a clear intention to remain in Cyprus long-term.
Last year, the government also introduced new naturalization criteria for highly skilled professionals, applying to employees of companies that meet strict qualifications. While they must still meet the core eligibility requirements, they benefit from relaxed conditions regarding residency and language. These candidates need to have lived in Cyprus for just three to four years in the last decade and may only need to prove A2-level Greek proficiency.
