Smart Meters Are Rolling Out Across Cyprus
The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has officially begun installing smart electricity meters. This project, which stems from a decision made five years ago, is expected to benefit both consumers and the energy sector.
The chairman of the EAC Board of Directors announced that a large shipment of smart meters arrived this week. Installation and testing are set to begin in the coming days, starting in city centers before gradually expanding to suburban areas.
By the end of the year, 150,000 smart meters are expected to be installed, with the number rising to 250,000 by June 2026.
These new meters will give users real-time insights into their electricity consumption, allowing them to manage their energy use more effectively. For instance, consumers can decide to run energy-intensive appliances during off-peak hours to save money.
From the energy provider's perspective, smart meters will simplify the process of detecting faults, enabling faster repairs. They will also eliminate the need for EAC staff to visit households every two months for manual readings. Additionally, the new system will make it easier to identify cases of electricity theft.
