In Cyprus, part of paid vehicle registration documents not issued — drivers overpaid
Some vehicle owners in Southern Cyprus paid for the renewal of registration documents, but the documents were not issued due to a system malfunction, reports the Department of Road Transport (Τμήμα Οδικών Μεταφορών, Department of Road Transport). The problem was detected on September 8, 2025: the system was overloaded, and approximately 1% of payments did not result in the correct issuance of documents, despite funds being deducted from cards.
According to the department, the amount was automatically refunded to the payers’ accounts, but many drivers did not receive notifications and believed the renewal was successful. In one public example, a TV viewer paid €237 for renewal; the money was returned the same day without explanation, and upon attempting payment again, the system charged an additional €33.70.
The Traffic Police contacted the Legal Service for instructions regarding drivers who received fines for not having a valid registration document. The Department began sending notifications to affected vehicle owners asking them to redo the procedure, though many were not warned about potential additional fees.
Important for Cyprus residents: check bank statements and confirmation of successful document issuance before re-paying; keep electronic and paper receipts; if fined, contact Traffic Police and request clarification through the Legal Service. According to official instructions, in disputed cases, retain all payment confirmations and, if necessary, file an appeal.
