Reforms for mechanical and electrical engineering contractors announced in Cyprus
On April 1, 2026, in Cyprus, President Nikos Christodoulides, in a greeting read by Minister of Interior Constantinos Ioannou, announced planned reforms to support the Cyprus Association of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Contractors (SEMEK) during the organization's dinner.
The government intends to simplify project procedures, reduce bureaucracy, and increase transparency and quality of work, the head of state noted. The speech emphasized the importance of the Association's contribution to the development of infrastructure and the economy in Cyprus.
Specific measures include a revision of electricity legislation to modernize the regulatory framework, strengthen the safety of electrical installations, regulate the licensing of individuals and legal entities, and introduce periodic inspections of facilities. Additionally, in cooperation with the Association, the creation of a comprehensive legal framework for the profession of mechanical contractor is being considered to enhance professional competence and sector reliability.
The President pointed to the impact of sustainability, the green transition, and digital updates on the industry and stressed the readiness of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works to provide systematic support for the implementation of these reforms.
