Cyprus approves construction of its first crematorium
Golden Leaves Cyprus Crematorium Limited has received the first official planning permit for the construction of the first crematorium in Cyprus. The project is described as a historic step for the modernization of funeral services on the island, ten years after the passing of cremation legislation.
According to the company's statement, construction of the facility will begin in September 2026, with completion expected in approximately 18 months. The crematorium will be located in the Ayia Varvara area and will become the first fully licensed institution of its kind in the country.
The company notes that the new facility will offer a modern and environmentally responsible alternative to traditional burial. The project is also set to resolve a long-standing issue for residents of Cyprus and foreign nationals living on the island, who until now have had to travel abroad for cremation, facing additional costs and complex procedures.
Company representative and director of Angel Guardians funeral home, Maureen Watt, stated that the launch of the project is a significant milestone for the country.
According to her, the company's goal is to provide families with a dignified, modern, and environmentally safe choice, as well as to ensure services meet high European standards of quality and environmental control.
The emergence of the first crematorium in Cyprus is expected to significantly change the funeral services sector and provide island residents with new options when choosing how to say goodbye to their loved ones.
