New prison for 1,500 inmates to be built in Cyprus for €300 million
Cyprus plans to build a new correctional facility in the Mathiatis area.
According to Justice Minister Costas Fitiris, a plot of approximately 1.3 million square meters has already been allocated for the project. The construction cost is estimated at €300 million, with a capacity of up to 1,500 inmates.
The project aims to address the overcrowding issue in existing prisons. Currently, the central prison holds over 1,100 people, and conditions do not meet modern standards.
In parallel, the authorities plan to hire 90 new staff members and appoint a new prison director. Additional measures are also being considered, including the deportation of some inmates and the expansion of infrastructure.
The construction of the new facility is intended to be part of a large-scale reform of the penitentiary system.
