National Strategy for the Development of Early Childhood Education Presented in Cyprus
Cyprus authorities have presented the first National Strategy and Action Plan for Early Childhood Education and Care. According to the government, the reform is expected to impact the long-term social and educational development of the country.
The strategy was announced at a joint press conference at the Presidential Palace by Minister of Education Athena Michaelidou and Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Cleo Papaellina.
The new plan introduces, for the first time, a unified approach to the education and care system for children from birth to age six. At the heart of the strategy are the child, the family, and the community, with the main goal being to provide accessible, high-quality, and inclusive services for early childhood.
The strategy runs until 2030 and is based on five key areas:
— system governance;
— accessibility of services;
— educational curriculum;
— workforce development;
— monitoring and evaluation.
In total, the plan includes 30 specific measures developed in accordance with European quality standards.
Furthermore, the strategy provides for expanding access to early childhood education for children under three, as well as support for children with special educational needs and those from vulnerable families.
