Cyprus is hosting a summit on Syrian migration
In the Republic of Cyprus, an international meeting of interior ministers is taking place on Friday to discuss migration issues. Summit participants are discussing Cyprus' plans to declare parts of Syria safe for returning migrants.
According to the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Cyprus, the meeting will be attended by interior ministers and officials from Greece, the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland, Denmark, Italy, and Malta.
It is expected that meeting participants will consider ways to advance realistic measures to address serious immigration issues.
Additionally, the summit "will focus on providing technical and financial support to neighboring third countries, recognizing their important role and contribution to halting the flow of migrants into the European Union." Cyprus Minister of Interior Constantinos Ioannou will raise the issue of the need for the EU to continue providing substantial assistance to Lebanon in line with agreements with Egypt and Tunisia.
Cyprus authorities believe this is a necessary measure, "taking into account that Lebanon is called upon to address serious social, economic, and political problems due to the large number of Syrian citizens on its territory."
Since mid-April, Cyprus has been in a "crisis state" due to the increasing number of migrants arriving on the island. The country's president, Nicos Anastasiades, has already appealed to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to intervene in the situation.
The President of the European Commission arrived in Beirut with the leader of Cyprus, where she announced the allocation of one billion euros in aid to Lebanon, primarily aimed at preventing illegal immigration.
It should be noted that this week, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah called for a national decision to "open the sea for all who want to leave for Europe, to Cyprus, to a country of the European Union closest to the Middle East."
