Fire Safety Week Begins in Cyprus
Cyprus has launched Fire Safety Week as the country enters the high-risk fire season—this year, under particularly dry conditions due to a severe drought.
Running from April 28 to May 4, the initiative aims to raise public awareness about fire hazards and how to prevent them. Now in its 24th consecutive year, the campaign is led by the Cyprus Fire Service in collaboration with insurance provider CNP. Throughout the week, the public is being educated on fire prevention and safety practices.
Fire Safety Week will conclude with a public event on May 3 at My Mall in Limassol, taking place from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Visitors will be able to explore fire engines and equipment, and receive safety advice directly from professionals.
According to the Chief Fire Officer of Cyprus, the fire service receives approximately 13,000 emergency calls every year. Of these, around 8,500 involve fires, while the remaining 4,500 relate to other types of emergency assistance.
Over 90% of all fires in Cyprus are caused by human activity—often due to negligence, improper burning of waste, or intentional arson. Each year, about 5,000 fires occur in rural areas and around 3,500 in urban environments.
Authorities also reminded the public that penalties for arson-related crimes were toughened last year. Offenders now face up to 12 years in prison or a fine of up to €100,000.
