Cyprus strengthens the fight against illegal taxis: fine increased to 300 euros
New rules to combat “pirate” taxis have recently come into force in Cyprus. The fine for illegal taxi operations now reaches 300 euros, compared to only 85 euros previously.
The head of the traffic police, Haris Evripidou, instructed all departments to actively detect illegal transportation and strictly enforce the new measures. The main goal is to increase the effectiveness of penalties and reduce the number of violations on the roads.
However, the fight against pirate taxis is complicated. Many cases collapse in court due to a lack of sufficient evidence: passengers often refuse to testify, and proving payment for a ride can be difficult. Some cases are also brought to court without proper investigation, leading to acquittals.
The police intend to change their approach to investigations: from now on, cases should be prepared more thoroughly to increase the chances of actually bringing offenders to justice.
Earlier, the possibility of introducing fines for passengers of illegal taxis was discussed. According to the draft law, a passenger could be fined up to 100 euros, and a driver up to 300–500 euros. The bill has not yet been finally adopted.
The new measures are intended to make Cyprus’ roads safer and to reduce the activities of illegal carriers.
