In Cyprus, cameras will be installed to monitor parking on sidewalks
In the Republic of Cyprus, cameras will soon be installed to monitor illegal parking of vehicles on sidewalks.
A bill passed by parliament in December 2023 grants municipalities and communities the ability to install photo-marking systems, which will monitor, among other things, illegal parking of vehicles on sidewalks, a serious obstacle for people with limited mobility.
According to the Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeadis, the department is currently preparing relevant regulations that will authorize competent authorities and municipalities to install such photo-marking systems.
The Minister also mentioned the evacuation of vehicles as a deterrent measure that was discussed but ultimately withdrawn from the bill.
"Our intention is to reintroduce it for consideration," added the minister.
When asked whether there would be discussions about increasing extrajudicial fines for blocking sidewalks, Alexis Vafeadis replied that such an option is being considered, but at the moment, the police's capabilities are limited.
