In Cyprus, a zero VAT rate on meat and vegetables has been implemented
As of December 1, a zero VAT rate on meat and vegetables has come into effect in Cyprus. This support measure will be in place until May 31 of the following year.
The zero VAT applies to fresh, chilled, or frozen meat and meat by-products, including beef, pork, lamb, goat meat, poultry, and rabbit meat. Among the vegetables covered by the zero taxation are fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, onions, shallots, leeks, garlic, various types of cabbage, including leafy, Brussels sprouts, white and broccoli, as well as turnips and several other vegetables.
Furthermore, the support measure includes lettuce and radishes, carrots, and other edible roots, as well as legumes with pods, such as peas and beans. The support also extends to asparagus, eggplants, celery, mushrooms, truffles, peppers, spinach, artichokes, unprepared olives, pumpkins, zucchinis, capers, and fennel.
This new list of items with zero VAT will be added to products already in this category, including bread, milk, eggs, baby food, diapers, feminine hygiene products, and adult diapers.
It's worth noting that on October 19, the Government of the Republic of Cyprus approved 17 support measures for households and businesses, with a total allocation of 196 million euros. The introduction of zero VAT on meat and vegetables from December 1, 2023, to May 31, 2024, is one of these measures.
