The Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) has announced that from March 27, 2026, a new feature for displaying barcodes to fulfill prescriptions via the GHS (GeSY) Beneficiary Portal (Πύλη Δικαιούχων) will be introduced in Cyprus.

Thanks to this update, beneficiaries will be able to receive medicines, medical devices, and related products prescribed by their doctor at pharmacies by scanning a barcode corresponding to the specific prescription. The feature is accessed via the GHS website (www.gesy.org.cy): after logging into the Portal, beneficiaries select the "Available Referrals" (Διαθέσιμες Παραπομπές) section, then the "Prescriptions" (Συνταγές) category, where the barcode is displayed.

When visiting a pharmacy, it is sufficient to present the barcode to the pharmacist to fulfill the prescription; disclosing personal data is not required. This innovation is an extension of the existing option to print barcodes on paper prescriptions and aims to strengthen the protection of personal data during the dispensing of medications.

Alternatively, it is still possible to obtain a printed prescription from the attending physician. To access the new feature, the beneficiary must have an account in the Beneficiary Portal and an associated Beneficiary File.
