On Tuesday evening, Cyprus officially presented the Business Innovation Center in the space sector (Space BIC), launched at the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence. The announcement was made by Deputy Minister for Scientific Research Nikodemos Damianou.
The event was attended by local and international representatives from the scientific and business communities. According to Nikodemos Damianou, space technologies can be applied to solve practical problems on Earth, including climate monitoring, supporting sustainable agriculture, developing intelligent mobility, enhancing security, and responding to natural disasters.
The center will provide researchers and innovators with access to infrastructure, mentorship, funding opportunities, and connections to scientific networks. The first participation competition is open until October 15. Nikodemos Damianou urged scientists, innovators, and youth to join the emerging ecosystem and use the platform for technology testing and prototype development.
Giorgos Komodromos, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, also highlighted the applied nature of the projects in his speech. Diophantos Hadjimitsis, Executive Director of the Eratosthenes Centre, described the launch as an important milestone for Cyprus and the region, emphasizing the center’s role as a platform for developing space projects.
