Nicosia prepares for the biggest marathon of the year
On Sunday, 18 January, the capital of Cyprus will host the Bank of Cyprus Nicosia Marathon – The Capital Race, the city’s largest running event. More than 8,000 runners from dozens of countries around the world will take part — from Europe and the USA to Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
Participants will compete in distances of 42 km, 21 km, 10 km, 5 km, a corporate race and a 1 km children’s start. The races will pass through the historic center of Nicosia — from Solomou Square to Eleftheria Square, through the old town and the capital’s landmark sites.
The marathon has a charitable character: the funds raised are directed to support the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society. Hundreds of volunteers from across the island are involved in the organization.
Due to the races, roads in Nicosia will be closed on Sunday, traffic will be diverted, and police and traffic control services will be on duty.
