The Government of Cyprus publicly expressed its dissatisfaction to the United Kingdom on Monday over what it considers a lack of "clear and timely guarantees" that British bases on the island will be used exclusively for humanitarian purposes. The statement followed an overnight drone attack on the RAF Akrotiri base.

Following an expanded meeting of the National Security Council, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that Nicosia expected unambiguous clarifications from London, especially after statements made by the British Prime Minister.

"We view this with dissatisfaction. Despite assurances, there was no clear clarification that British bases in Cyprus would under no circumstances be used for anything other than humanitarian purposes," he noted.

President Nikos Christodoulides also briefed political leaders on the development of the situation, population protection measures, and diplomatic contacts.

According to Letymbiotis, Cyprus subsequently received additional clarifications from the UK Foreign Secretary; however, the Republic's position remains unchanged: the island must maintain a humanitarian role.

"Our message is clear—Cyprus is a humanitarian hub. This is what we want to demonstrate and what we have served for decades," he emphasized.

The government intends to take additional diplomatic and institutional steps, including in connection with the lack of timely information provided to residents of areas adjacent to the bases.

Responding to a question about a possible review of the status of the British bases, the spokesman did not rule out any options.

The authorities also reaffirmed that the Republic of Cyprus has not participated and does not intend to participate in any military operations.

The National Security Council continues to operate around the clock, with all active protocols engaged. The origin of the drone remains under investigation.
