A 17-year-old, Aliki Nikolaou, died at night on the Limassol–Nicosia highway: the driver was drunk

Early on Saturday morning, at around 02:30, a fatal accident occurred on the Limassol–Nicosia motorway in the Kakoratzia area, in which 17-year-old Aliki Nikolaou from Lympia lost her life.
According to the police, a double-cabin pickup truck driven by a 22-year-old Greek Cypriot was entering the highway from the left lane, after which the driver lost control and the vehicle crashed at high speed into a metal barrier.
Aliki, who was sitting in the back seat, died at the scene from her injuries. Four other passengers sustained minor injuries and were pulled out of the vehicle by firefighters. The injured received treatment at Larnaca Hospital and were discharged home.
A preliminary test showed the presence of alcohol in the driver’s system. He refused a second test and was arrested. He also received medical care at the emergency department. The circumstances of the accident are being investigated by the police and the traffic department.
The tragedy occurred against the backdrop of two more road deaths in Cyprus the previous day. On Friday morning, a 28-year-old motorcyclist, Ukrainian citizen Artem Fomichev, died in a collision with a truck, and later a 66-year-old woman struck by a car during a walk in Limassol also passed away.
