The Cyprus Oncology Society (OEK) issued clarifications regarding the procedure for approving nominative requests for anti-cancer medicines, which are processed through the Health Insurance Organization (HIO).

The Society recalled that after delays and procedural complications that arose during the transfer of the Nominative Request Committee from the Ministry of Health to the HIO, OEK actively participated in consultations to speed up and improve the process.

Following a meeting between OEK and HIO, the parties agreed on a scientifically based schedule for completing and updating therapeutic protocols. As noted, this schedule continues to be followed thanks to the involvement of oncologists who are members of the Society.

The update of the protocols has already helped reduce the number of nominative requests. The committee makes decisions based on documented scientific criteria adhering to European and American guidelines. Its members include oncologists representing OEK.

If a request is rejected, the treating physician retains the right to appeal to the relevant board. OEK stresses that it understands patients’ concerns and guarantees the transparent application of existing criteria.

The Society stated that it continues to monitor the situation and is ready to take additional steps together with the HIO whenever necessary.
