Power outages paralyzed the work of diagnostic centers in Cyprus
![]()
On the evening of August 13, sudden power outages occurred in Cyprus, seriously disrupting the operation of diagnostic centers. According to Georgios Kuttoukis, president of the Association of Diagnostic Centers, the situation directly affected examinations, including X-rays, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
During tests, sudden blackouts caused equipment to stop completely. This not only disrupts diagnostics but also poses health risks to patients. In particular, people with heart conditions, who take special medications before examinations, are forced to repeat doses when procedures are postponed, which can lead to complications.
Elderly patients are particularly affected by outages. In X-ray rooms, pacemakers are often temporarily turned off to avoid interference, and sudden darkness and confined spaces can cause severe stress and panic in people prone to claustrophobia.
Unlike hospitals connected to backup power sources, most diagnostic centers are not equipped with such systems. As a result, their work comes to a complete halt during outages.
The Association of Diagnostic Centers unites about 75% of all such institutions on the island, making the problem widespread and affecting the vast majority of medical organizations of this type.
