Cyprus pension organizations outraged by postponement of auto insurance law vote
The pension unions of PASYDY and SEK, the EKYSY organization, and the Observatory for Third Age Issues have protested the postponement of the parliamentary discussion and vote on a bill introduced by MP Alexandra Attalides.
The bill concerns amendments to the law on compulsory motor vehicle insurance (third-party liability). The proposal aimed to introduce rules restricting insurance companies' refusal to enter into contracts with citizens, intended to increase transparency and ensure equal conditions in the auto insurance sector.
According to the organizations, the bill had been discussed in parliament for three years, and unanimous support for its adoption had been reached in the relevant committee. However, they claim that at the initiative of the DISY party, the plenary consideration was postponed at the last moment.
Pension associations called on all political parties to "show responsibility, not yield to pressure from insurance companies, and return the bill to the plenary agenda for a vote as soon as possible."
They estimate that the issue directly affects more than 20% of the Cyprus population.
