A €3.6 million contract has been signed to resume works at the river mouth in Liopetri
Contracts were signed on Tuesday to resume works at the river mouth in Liopetri, amounting to €3.6 million over a 12-month period.
The contract provides for the continuation and completion of works on the piers as part of a broader EU-funded project being implemented by the town planning department for the reconstruction of the river mouth and the fishing harbour.
Under the contract affecting the road network, the works have already been completed, while pavements and bicycle lanes remain unfinished. Over the next year, it is planned to complete the design of buildings and the surrounding area, including parking facilities, a bridge and other infrastructure.
Following the completion of the pier works, a new contract will be signed for the implementation of the remaining components. The aim of the project is to reconstruct the river mouth and the fishing harbour, incorporate them into a national park, ensure the uninterrupted operation of the harbour, protect the environment and enhance the area’s attractiveness for visitors.
Upon completion, the area is expected to receive new paved roads, stormwater drainage systems, underground electricity and telephone cables, pavements and bicycle lanes, mooring and storage facilities for fishing vessels, soft lighting, visitor parking and a bridge connecting the riverbanks.
Works on the €8 million project began in 2020 under contractor Lois Builders Ltd and were initially scheduled for completion in 2023. At the end of 2024, the Ministry of the Interior terminated the contractor’s contract, and construction resumed in March 2025.
