Cyprus Police: you may cross a red light to let an ambulance pass — there will be no fine

The police reminded drivers that allowing ambulances to pass without obstruction is an absolute priority: any delay can cost a person their life.
It is noted that some drivers are afraid to move at intersections with traffic cameras and, as a result, obstruct ambulances.
The police explain:
If an ambulance approaches an intersection with its siren and flashing lights on, a driver may and must move forward, even if this means:
-
- crossing the stop line or a solid line;
- driving through a red signal.
In such cases, no fines are issued.
The company operating the photo enforcement system has been instructed to review such cases and not issue fines when a driver is giving way to emergency vehicles (ambulance, fire service, police).
If a fine is nevertheless issued for a situation where you were letting an ambulance pass, the police advise contacting the operator by phone at 80008009 (weekdays from 08:00 to 17:00) — after verification, the fine will be cancelled.
The police urge drivers to act responsibly and promptly give way to all emergency service vehicles: every second can be a matter of someone’s life.
