Police Investigate Mass Poisoning of Kittens in Mountain Village Near Larnaca
The police in Cyprus are investigating a case of animal cruelty after residents of the small village of Vavla, located in the mountainous area of Larnaca, reported a mass poisoning of kittens.
According to the newspaper Philenews, local residents stated that more than 50 kittens were being cared for in the area, but 30 of them suddenly disappeared, and in the last few days, six have been found dead.
“There are many cats in this area—about 50—and someone has poisoned them; we don’t know how. On Wednesday morning, my neighbor found two dead cats under her car. When I returned home, I found one dead at my doorstep, and in the following days, we found others. About 30 cats have gone missing, and we believe they are dead,” one villager told the publication.
The source also noted that the village is home to wild fauna, which means that other protected animals are also at risk of animal cruelty.
This case has been reported to the Lefkara police. As part of the ongoing investigation, the dead cats have been sent for autopsy, and food containers will be examined by the state chemical service.
