Tree planting in honor of Donald Trump sparked controversy in the city

In Larnaca, public debate intensified after it became known that the local Jewish community plans to dedicate an upcoming tree-planting event to Donald Trump. Representatives of the community explain this choice by stating that, in their opinion, Trump played an important role in the release of hostages and deserves recognition.
The municipality reports that the initial notification concerned only an environmental initiative — the planting of 50 trees. The letter did not mention that the event would have a personal “dedication.” Mayor Andreas Vyras подчеркнул that the authorities learned the details of the event only after receiving the official invitation, and the city did not issue any special permits to hold an action in honor of any individual.
At the same time, the municipality has started receiving calls from residents expressing dissatisfaction with the initiative and warning of possible protests.
