After a Police Appeal, Swindler Caught in Cyprus
In the Republic of Cyprus, following a police appeal to the public, a suspect in a major financial scam has been apprehended. The fraudster was soliciting investments from victims for a youth football team.
The Cyprus Police appealed to the public for assistance in locating a 32-year-old Greco-Cypriot suspected of fraud on the morning of February 5th. The perpetrator was apprehended a few hours later.
The detained man is suspected of embezzling €46,500, which he obtained from his victims under the guise of investments.
According to the investigation, the 32-year-old scammer operated from December 2023 to January 2024. During this time, the enterprising man managed to deceive two individuals. He would inform his victims that he possessed a large sum of money in foreign accounts, which he planned to use to purchase one of the Cypriot football teams.
At the same time, he proposed to gullible citizens to invest in the Paralimni Youth Football Association.
According to local media reports, one of the victims was a former footballer whom the suspect promised to hire as a personal advisor. Yielding to the scammer's persuasion, he "invested" €36,500 in the project. Another victim, a woman, handed over €10,000 to the fraudster.
