Firefighters ran out of water in Vouni: village severely damaged by flames

During the efforts to extinguish a massive wildfire in the area of Vouni (Limassol district), firefighters ran out of water at the most critical moment. This was reported by local mukhtar Matteos Protopapas, who emphasized that the lack of water supply allowed the fire to spread rapidly, causing serious damage.
According to Protopapas, the flames reached residential houses in the village center, and the historic chapel of Saint Ioannis tou Rossou was completely destroyed. One resident sustained severe burns and was taken to Nicosia General Hospital. The mukhtar also stated that firefighting assistance did not arrive in the first hours of the fire, and residents had to fight the flames on their own and coordinate rescue efforts.
A similar situation occurred in the village of Alassa, where, according to mukhtar Xenia Konstantinou, a house, outbuildings, and fruit orchards were destroyed. Many residents were evacuated but later began returning. Those who couldn't return were housed in Limassol, while those remaining in the village were provided with food and water despite lack of electricity and running water.
District Governor Yiannis Tsoulouftas reported that emergency response teams were formed immediately after the damage assessment. Water tankers, generators, and repair crews were dispatched to the region. Additionally, local hotels provided temporary accommodation for those affected, in coordination with civil defense.
The fire posed a serious challenge for several villages in the Limassol region, highlighting the need for better preparedness and quicker response from emergency services in times of crisis.
