Firefighters Extinguish Major Fire in Paphos
In Paphos, firefighters battled flames throughout the night near the village of Miliou. By morning, the fire was brought under control and extinguished.
Currently, scattered smoldering hotspots remain at the scene. Firefighters continue to douse these from both the ground and the air, with two aircraft deployed.
Fire brigades remain on high alert to prevent any possible flare-ups.
The fire in the Miliou community started the previous afternoon. Civil Defense was ready to evacuate the communities of Simou and Drimos, but it was not necessary. For safety reasons, two houses in two settlements were evacuated. By late evening, the fire was under control.
The fire destroyed 50 hectares of dry grass, wild vegetation, and trees. Firefighters stayed in the area overnight, working on the final extinguishment and containment of the fire with the help of earth-moving machines.
From the first moments of the fire, Paphos police officers arrived at the scene and conducted inspections with fire service representatives.
The fire apparently started at the roadside between Giolou and Polis Chrysochous. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
