Cyprus President Hopes for Rapid De-escalation of US-Israel-Iran Conflict
President Nikos Christodoulides expressed hope for a swift de-escalation of the conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran.
"We are monitoring the situation very closely. We hope that conditions for de-escalation will soon be created," the head of state said on the sidelines of an event hosted by the Movement of Ecologists – Citizens' Cooperation.
The President reported that a National Security Council meeting was convened earlier that day. He remains in constant communication with Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, Justice Minister Costas Fitiris, and NSC Chief Tasos Tzionis.
Cyprus, he stated, will act within its humanitarian framework and maintains contact with neighboring states, the EU, the US, and the UK. Christodoulides confirmed that British PM Keir Starmer personally notified him that British bases in Cyprus were not used in the recent strikes. The ESTIA plan has been activated to facilitate evacuations. Regarding EU coordination, he noted the matter falls under the remit of EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
