Cyprus Shelters Overwhelmed: Number of Homeless Animals Continues to Rise

Animal welfare advocates in Cyprus are sounding the alarm due to a rapid increase in stray dogs and a decline in adoption interest. The Simba Animal Aids Cyprus shelter in Strovolos is currently housing 120 dogs, exceeding its capacity.

Shelter manager Alexandros Oriettas noted that the problem cannot be solved simply by building more enclosures. According to him, systemic measures are needed—compulsory identification and sterilization of animals. He also reported that the shelter regularly receives puppies found in trash bins, while senior dogs are frequently abandoned on the streets.

According to Oriettas, while 2025 was more successful in terms of adoptions, the figures are still far from ideal. The shelter emphasizes that they vet future living conditions before handing over an animal. Volunteer days are held every Saturday from 9:00 to 13:00.
