The Kamarés dam project in Larnaca is expected to resolve chronic flooding
The Kamarés flood control project in Larnaca, Cyprus, which is scheduled for completion in 2027, will largely resolve long-standing flooding problems, Larnaca District Administration head Angelos Hatzicharalambous said on Saturday.
According to him, the project had been discussed for many years following severe damage to homes and property in the Kamarés area caused by floods at the end of 2014. Initially, implementation was planned by the state for 2015, then transferred to the Larnaca Sewerage Board, and is currently being carried out by the district administration.
The works include widening and deepening the Kamarés channel and connecting all adjacent stormwater networks to it. In the section above Dryadon Street, the existing concrete channel will be dismantled and replaced with a new open rectangular concrete-lined channel at a lower level; the upstream open earthen channel will also be adapted.
The aim of the project is to eliminate flooding problems observed since 2014 and to protect residential areas of the municipalities of Larnaca and Aradippou located in the Kalo Chorio river basin in Cyprus. The cost of the works is estimated at around €7 million, with completion expected in 2027; however, progress is rapid and the project is likely to be completed earlier than scheduled.
After the completion of Kamarés, the next phase will begin, targeting the Vergina area of the municipality of Aradippou; its preliminary cost is estimated at €3–4 million, with the final amount to be determined after the completion of a study expected by the end of the year. According to Hatzicharalambous, the district administration will seek central funding promised by the late Interior Minister Sokratis Hasikos. “We will push this project forward in order to definitively end and resolve the flooding problem in this area,” he added.
