The Metekhan crossing point expansion project is nearing completion
On 29 January 2026, a ceremony was held in Cyprus to mark the near completion of the Metekhan crossing point expansion project. The event was attended by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Cyprus and Head of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Hassim Diagne, as well as representatives of the two leaders.
According to the organizers, Diagne spoke on behalf of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, María Ángela Holguín. The ceremony took place in the pedestrian section of the Metekhan crossing point. Hassim Diagne was accompanied by the Presidential Office Advisor Mehmet Dana, the Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou, and other officials.
The organizers’ statement notes that the completion of the project is aimed at easing daily life and underscores the importance of cooperation and confidence-building measures between the sides. Participants emphasized that the improved infrastructure of the crossing point should contribute to more convenient and safer pedestrian movement.
For residents, this means a potential reduction in queues and more comfortable conditions when crossing the Metekhan checkpoint, as well as strengthened interaction mechanisms aimed at simplifying daily movements.
