Makarios Avenue in Nicosia Could Open to Eco-Friendly Vehicles
The "Nicosia – Capital of Cyprus" initiative has expressed strong support for the potential opening of Makarios Avenue to eco-friendly vehicles in both directions, as well as the idea of turning it into a pedestrian street on weekends.
This change is expected to significantly improve mobility and traffic flow in the city center.
The proposal suggests that these new traffic regulations should only apply on weekdays and during specific times of day, so as not to disrupt the smooth functioning of the city’s center or negatively impact the quality of life for residents, while still providing a positive experience for visitors.
In addition to opening the avenue to eco-friendly vehicles on weekdays, the plan also proposes providing easy and direct access to parking spaces both on the avenue and in adjacent lanes. This would help restore the integrity of the city’s commercial hub, which currently feels like a restricted area due to all the roads leading to the main avenue being blocked. This situation has made parking and access difficult.
