Travelers can cancel package tours for free due to the Middle East crisis
The Cyprus Consumer Protection Service has stated that travelers have the right to cancel a package tour free of charge before it begins if unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances arise at or near the destination that affect the safety of the trip.
The agency reminded that such circumstances may include war, serious security problems, threats to public health, or natural disasters. In these cases, tourists can terminate the contract without penalties and receive a full refund of payments made, although no additional compensation is provided.
A package tour is understood as a combination of at least two travel services — such as flight, accommodation, car rental, or excursions — sold by a single organizer at a total price.
The tour organizer also has the right to cancel the trip if it is impossible to fulfill the terms of the contract due to extraordinary circumstances. In such a case, they are obliged to refund all payments to the clients.
Tour operators may offer to reschedule the trip or provide a voucher, but acceptance of such an offer is at the traveler's discretion and does not waive their right to demand a full refund.
If travelers are already on the tour and cannot return home due to an emergency, the organizer is obliged to pay for hotel accommodation of a similar category for up to three nights per person, unless European passenger rights legislation provides for a longer period of assistance.
The tour operator is also required to provide tourists with necessary assistance, including information on medical services, local authorities, consular support, and possible alternative ways to return home.
The Consumer Protection Service urged travelers to follow official government announcements and recommendations from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus.
