Worker Fired Immediately After Hospital Leave — Case Referred to Authorities

In Cyprus, a man was dismissed on his very first day back from the hospital where he had been receiving treatment for a chronic condition.
According to the employee, when he was hired by the private company several months ago, he informed the employer about his chronic illness and warned that he might occasionally require short-term absences for health reasons.
After several hospitalizations, the employer began demanding precise advance notice of his absences, which the employee states is impossible due to the unpredictable nature of the disease.
In early January, the man's condition deteriorated sharply, and doctors recommended immediate hospitalization. Despite this, he reported for duty but was forced to leave the workplace after a few hours due to his health.
While he was in the hospital, management stated they would discuss the situation upon his return. However, on his first day back at work, the employee was informed of the termination of his employment. The written notice merely stated that his position was no longer required.
The Federation of Patient Associations of Cyprus (OSAK) has taken up the case.
OSAK Honorary President Marios Kouloumas stated that such incidents are unacceptable. He emphasized that people with chronic illnesses make significant efforts to remain in the labor market and should receive support rather than face discrimination.
The organization is assisting the victim in filing an official complaint for an investigation.
