Investigative authorities have expanded the investigation into the sudden death of a 78-year-old man after new circumstances emerged in the case. The police anti-narcotics unit has been brought into the investigation.

According to law enforcement officials, several days before the tragedy the victim’s son had already been on the police’s radar in connection with a drug-related case, which is now being considered a possible factor in the investigation.

The events began on Saturday, when the elderly man’s wife replaced a water bottle in a cooler and prepared a drink. Shortly afterwards she suddenly felt unwell and was taken to Larnaca Hospital, where her condition was assessed as serious. The man himself was released home after a medical examination, however a few hours later he was found dead. No visible signs of violence were discovered, and the death was classified as sudden.

The following day, during a visit by neighbours and relatives, three more people experienced a sudden deterioration in their condition and lost consciousness. All of them were hospitalized, with one of the victims in the intensive care unit.

The water cooler was seized and sent for laboratory testing. Investigators do not rule out that a toxic substance or a drug may have been added to the water. Final conclusions will be made after the test results are obtained.
