In Cyprus, more than 3,000 domestic violence cases were reported to the police in 2025, exceeding figures from previous years, according to police officer Evi Nikolaou.

According to the police, the increase in reports reflects victims’ growing trust in law enforcement, as well as the work of regional services established in 2021 to handle such cases. However, experts note that many incidents still remain unreported and are not reflected in statistics, as victims do not always seek help.

In July 2025, the mobile support system Elpis was launched, allowing victims to discreetly and quickly contact the police in case of danger. Since its launch, over 244 people have registered in the app, and 14 have used the “panic button,” leading to prompt police intervention.

Gender Equality Commissioner Josie Christodoulou emphasized that tackling domestic violence should focus not only on helping victims but also on preventing such cases and punishing offenders. According to her, domestic violence often stems from entrenched socio-cultural stereotypes and unequal power relations.
