Paphos Fisherman Catches the World’s Fastest Shark
A local fisherman from Paphos recently caught a Shortfin Mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus), known as the fastest shark in the world. The remarkable catch was recorded on video, which quickly went viral on the internet.
According to Sigmalive, the lucky fisherman is Andreas Panayiotides. The shark measured approximately 1.2 meters in length and weighed between 5 and 10 kilograms.
The Shortfin Mako belongs to the Lamnidae family and holds the title of the fastest shark on the planet, capable of reaching speeds over 70 km/h.
Adult Mako sharks can grow to weigh as much as 500 kg and measure over four meters in length.
This predator primarily preys on fish such as tuna, swordfish, and other marine creatures.
Mako sharks are generally not considered dangerous to humans.
However, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the species as endangered.
