Social networks banned for teenagers: the Greek government is preparing a new control system
The Greek government is considering restricting minors’ access to social networks through a new authentication system using digital wallets. According to the report, the key tools in this project will be Kids Wallet and Gov.gr Wallet. These applications will allow verification of the user’s age — thereby blocking access for those who have not yet reached the set limit.
The decision will be made at the level of the Prime Minister. It is believed that the age threshold may be set at 15 or 16 — as in Australia, for example, where those under 16 are prohibited from having social media accounts. At the same time, it is noted that such restrictions can technically be bypassed, which is why the electronic verification system will form the basis of the initiative.
Kids Wallet assumes that parents will participate in confirming their children’s age — they give permission and verify the child’s identity. The platform is expected to be ready as early as October. Gov.gr Wallet, in turn, could be used to control access not only to social networks but also to online betting: those under 21 would not be allowed to participate in gambling.
The authorities are expected to publish official details of this initiative soon.
