The Council of Ministers has simplified the reimbursement of medical expenses abroad

On Wednesday, the Council of Ministers approved the Ministry of Health’s proposal to simplify the procedures for reimbursing patients’ medical treatment expenses abroad. Covered costs include treatment, flights, accommodation, and meals for patients and their companions. Reminder: such assistance is available only if the same service is not provided in the Cypriot public healthcare sector.
“Today’s decision significantly eases the lives of patients and shortens the processing time for applications and payments,” said Health Minister Michalis Damianos after the meeting. His words are quoted by a reporter.
Easier and faster. Now, to confirm income, the latest tax declaration or a salary certificate is sufficient. The requirement to provide three flight options has been removed — this will relieve inconvenience, especially in urgent cases. The Ministry reimburses economy-class tickets based on receipts. If there is no proof of accommodation, 18% of the established rate will be paid. Details are being finalized.
Effective immediately. The new rules apply to applications submitted from today. There is no retroactive effect.
“The Ministry of Health is taking another step toward more humane and practical support for patients and families by removing bureaucracy and speeding up the process,” Damianos concluded.
