Anti-Racism Guidelines Distributed Among Cypriot Police
The leadership of the Republic of Cyprus Police has distributed an "anti-racism memo" to its officers. The memo urges police to avoid any behavior during their duties that could be associated with racial discrimination.
This directive comes in response to a report by a European organization addressing illegal racial profiling. Following the publication of the report, a senior officer issued a note to all government agencies on behalf of Police Chief Stelios Papateodorou.
According to Philenews, the memo, which was sent to the Director of the Crime Investigation Department at Police Headquarters and all provincial police chiefs, serves as a reminder of what constitutes "racial discrimination/profiling." It also highlights the relevant sections of the legislation and the Criminal Code that officers are required to follow.
The note stresses that the Police leadership finds it crucial to emphasize that "stopping, searching, and detaining any person solely based on their nationality or other characteristics is not permitted."
Additionally, the memo underlines that "police officers must respect and protect the dignity and rights of every individual, free from bias and discrimination. They are expected to demonstrate professionalism and sensitivity, treating citizens courteously and ethically, without prejudice or stereotypes."
Furthermore, the written instructions provide detailed guidance on the legal provisions and police directives regarding how officers should carry out their duties, including their powers during vehicle stops and personal searches.
