Cyprus taxi drivers continue protests: a new 24-hour strike announced
Taxi drivers in Cyprus are continuing protest actions, announcing a new 24-hour work stoppage that will begin on Tuesday, January 20, at 06:00 in the morning and will last until Wednesday, January 21, at 06:00.
According to the Pancyprian Union of Urban Taxi Drivers (POAT), the decision was taken because after the previous protest action there were neither concrete steps nor meetings from the responsible state authorities to discuss and resolve the drivers’ demands.
The union recalled that on January 13 taxi drivers had already held a four-hour warning strike, but no dialogue with the authorities followed. As a result, POAT is implementing its previously announced plan for further mobilizations.
The official statement emphasizes that if there is no response even after the current 24-hour action, taxi drivers are ready to move to an indefinite strike, which could begin on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
On the days of the protest action, taxi drivers will gather:
- at Larnaca and Paphos airports
- in Limassol — in the parking area near the Germasogeia River
POAT calls on the authorities to immediately enter into dialogue, warning that further ignoring of the demands could seriously affect transport services for residents and tourists.
