Tragedy in Cyprus: four-year-old girl dies from influenza A
On the afternoon of January 25, a four-year-old girl infected with influenza A died at Makarios Children’s Hospital. The information was confirmed by a representative of the Cyprus Organization of State Health Services (OKYPY).
According to official data, the child’s condition deteriorated sharply over a short period of time. On Saturday, the girl was urgently transferred from Limassol General Hospital to the pediatric intensive care unit of Makarios Hospital, where she was connected to a mechanical ventilator. Despite doctors’ efforts and intensive treatment, the child could not be saved.
According to the attending physicians, the cause of death was multiple organ failure that developed against the background of a severe course of influenza infection. Doctors note that influenza A can, in some cases, progress extremely aggressively, especially in young children and patients with weakened immune systems.
The case has caused serious concern among the medical community. According to the latest data, the total number of deaths from influenza in Cyprus since the start of the epidemic season has reached 13. Doctors and healthcare officials once again urge parents to closely monitor their children’s condition, seek medical help promptly in cases of high fever, breathing difficulties and sudden deterioration in well-being, and not to ignore vaccination recommendations.
The Ministry of Health reminds that during periods of active spread of seasonal viruses it is especially important to observe preventive measures — hand hygiene, limiting contact when symptoms appear, and early consultation with a doctor.
