According to the latest European Social Survey (ESS 2023/24), young people in Cyprus are among the least satisfied with their lives in Europe. The report, prepared under the Infra4NextGen: The Health and Well-Being of People in Europe program, shows that the levels of happiness and trust in society among young islanders are noticeably below the EU average.

The main reasons for dissatisfaction include uncertainty about the future, rising housing and food prices, and limited job opportunities in their fields of study. Young Cypriots (aged 18 to 34) reported financial pressure, lack of stability, and a sense of social isolation more frequently than other respondents. These problems are particularly acute in urban areas, where the cost of living has risen by tens of percent over the past two years.

The study also highlights low trust in state institutions and Cyprus’s political system. Less than half of young respondents believe that their opinions are considered in decision-making, and most doubt the transparency and efficiency of government bodies. About 60% of participants admitted that they have thought about moving abroad in search of better living and career conditions.

Psychologists link these results to the aftermath of the pandemic, economic pressure, and growing social isolation. Young people increasingly report anxiety, burnout, and a sense of helplessness. Experts emphasize that authorities need to review employment and housing policies and develop programs to support young people’s mental health.

The ESS report stresses that, despite high education levels and developed digital infrastructure, the quality of life for young people in Cyprus remains unstable, while Northern European countries continue to show much higher levels of trust, civic engagement, and subjective well-being.
