Three patients received new kidneys in an international transplant chain
An internationally coordinated chain of three kidney transplants between Cyprus and Israel was successfully completed on Tuesday, resulting in three long-term dialysis patients receiving new organs.
The operations were carried out through the joint efforts of the transplant clinic at Nicosia General Hospital and the Rabin and Hadassah hospitals in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, respectively. According to the Organization of State Health Services (Okypy), the Nicosia team led the operation in close cooperation with the Israeli centers.
As part of the chain, a donor from Hadassah in Jerusalem donated a kidney to a patient in Cyprus. At the same time, a living donor from Cyprus provided a kidney that was transplanted into a recipient at Rabin Hospital. A donor from Rabin then donated a kidney to a second patient at Hadassah.
Okypy noted that the operation demonstrates the high level of specialization of the Nicosia transplant clinic and strong coordination among the medical teams. According to the organization, the Cypriot patient who underwent the transplant has been discharged in excellent condition and is recovering well. The statement also reminded that in recent years the clinic has carried out seven paired kidney transplants.
