The Veterinary School of the University of Thessaly will officially be housed in the old historic building of the Athienou municipal school.

The decision to lease the building was approved by the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Cyprus. The Mayor of the border municipality, Kyriakos Kareklas, thanked the government for its support, noting that opening the branch administration and initially housing the Veterinary School is a major step for the town's development and strengthening cooperation with the Greek university.

The University of Thessaly's intention to open a branch in Cyprus was first revealed on April 11, 2025. At that time, Rector Charalambos Billinis announced the creation of the Veterinary School in Athienou. This latest Cabinet decision finalizes the move.

Beyond the Veterinary School, the university plans to open other faculties at the Cyprus branch.

The old school building, constructed in 1925 and donated by Michalis Georgiou, is a historic site. It currently houses the offices of the school board.

Larnaca MP Andreas Apostolou also expressed satisfaction with the decision and reported that negotiations are underway for a Dairy School in Athienou, as well as the possible placement of a University of Thessaly Medical School branch at the local Health Center.

According to Apostolou, the goal is to transform the town and the entire Larnaca district into a hub for higher education and scientific research.
