EAC demanded an even greater increase in electricity tariffs
The Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC) has decided that the recent increase in electricity tariffs was insufficient and demanded a 7.5% increase in electricity tariffs for households — excluding VAT. As a result, the overall price hike will exceed 9%.
It is reported that the increase will only affect those consuming more than 800 kilowatt-hours over two months. Other consumer categories will pay less (but this is not certain).
The statement immediately provoked a sharp reaction from the authorities. Members of parliament called EAC's approach chaotic and accused it of trying to impose price hikes without transparent calculations.
The head of the parliamentary DISY committee, Kyriakos Hatsiannis, stated that citizens are simply being forced into a price increase in a rough manner, without opening the market or offering alternatives.
According to him, the people of Cyprus will not withstand yet another surge in prices. He was supported by AKEL MP Kostas Kostas. He said that people are paying the price for “chronic incompetence and greed” and accused the state of inaction.
He also reminded that Cyprus is the only country where solar power plants are switched off in the summer.
