The European rapid alert system RAPEX has published a new list of products containing hazardous chemical substances that pose a risk to health and the environment. Among the identified items are household and everyday goods, some of which may have reached the Cypriot market.

According to the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance of Cyprus, the list includes the following products:

1. Electric screwdriver Proxxon 22295 — plastic parts contain the phthalate DEHP in concentrations exceeding the legal limit (over 0.1% by weight).

2. Portable camping shower Sunwind Helios 20 L — plastic components contain the phthalates DBP and DEHP.

3. Travel backpack Vertero VE00040 — excessive levels of DEHP found in soft structural elements.

4. Inflatable swim ring — contains phthalates that may cause hormonal disruptions.

5. Bathroom mat VS VC2280 — phthalates DBP and DEHP detected at concentrations above EU safety limits.

6. Jewelry (earrings, rings, bracelets without labeling) — elevated levels of cadmium and nickel found, which may cause allergies and chronic poisoning upon prolonged skin contact.

The Ministry of Labour clarified that some of these items were spotted in European online stores accessible from Cyprus. While it has not been confirmed that these specific batches were sold on the island, competent authorities are already inspecting retail chains and warehouses.

The Cyprus Consumer Protection Service urges residents to be cautious when shopping online, especially on foreign platforms, and to immediately report suspicious products by calling: 22405637, 22405611, 22405609, or 22405635.

All mentioned products have been entered into the RAPEX database, which operates in all EU member states and enables rapid information exchange about unsafe products.

The Ministry reminded that the sale of goods containing phthalates, cadmium, or nickel above permissible levels is prohibited under EU law. Violators face fines and product withdrawal from the market.

Experts warn that such substances can have toxic effects on the reproductive system, cause allergic reactions, and accumulate in the body after long-term exposure. Citizens are advised to check product origins and prefer goods certified under EU standards.
