The Ministry of Health of Cyprus carried out its annual update of medicine prices authorized for sale in the country starting February 2. As a result, the co-payment amount that patients pay under the GESY system has changed for some medications, the Health Insurance Organization (OAY) reported.

Following the price review, the so-called Category II co-payments were adjusted for 291 medicines out of a total list of 2,419 items.

  • For 94 medicines, the co-payment was reduced,
  • for 197 medicines, it was increased.

This means that from February 2, some patients pay less at pharmacies, while for other medicines they pay more.

The current list of medicines with updated co-payments is published on the official GESY website. It indicates the new co-payment amounts and notes whether the amount increased or decreased compared to the rates in effect before February 1, 2026.

OAY reminded that the GESY system fully covers the cheapest medicine in each category. In this case, the patient pays only a fixed co-payment of 1 euro per medicine. If the doctor prescribes a more expensive equivalent, the patient pays the price difference.

Beneficiaries are advised to check with their doctors and pharmacists which medicines have zero co-payment, and to remember that they have the right to replace a prescribed medicine with an equivalent containing the same active ingredient and dosage without additional payment. Such medicines, OAY emphasizes, are safe and equally effective.
