In Cyprus, drivers are allowed to move vehicles from the accident site under certain conditions
The Cyprus Police announced the entry into force of amendments to the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Law (N. 86/1972), allowing vehicles to be moved after a road collision under specific conditions. The corresponding amendments were published in the Official Gazette of the Republic on 25 July 2025 (Paragraph I, Part I) as the Amendment Law (No. 3) 2025 (N. 146(I)/2025).
Under the new rules, participants in a collision can move vehicles to the nearest safe point to restore traffic flow if four conditions are met: no visible bodily injuries to anyone; no injury complaints and verification of the validity of driver’s and related documents; the ability to move without towing and without causing further damage to vehicles or the roadway; and safety for all road users and traffic.
The movement must be performed by the driver or another person with a valid driver’s license and insurance under the driver’s instruction. Before moving, participants must immediately notify their insurance companies and exchange names, policy numbers, driver’s license details, vehicle information (registration number, make, model, and color), and phone numbers. It is recommended to quickly take and exchange photos: final position of the vehicles, registration numbers, damages, and surroundings; photos should be sent to the insurance representative.
Restrictions: the provisions do not apply if an uninsured or government vehicle is involved or if the driver left the scene. The transfer and use of personal data and photos are allowed only in connection with this accident; other cases may result in administrative fines or criminal liability. Drivers are advised to consult the full text of the law in the Official Gazette.
