“Human Traces IV” shoe installation exhibition opens in Larnaca

From December 10 to January 11, the Larnaca Municipal Art Gallery will host an unusual installation exhibition titled “Human Traces IV – The Conversation of Worlds” by Cypriot artist Marios Spiliopoulos. At the center of the project are hundreds of pairs of worn shoes, donated by Larnaca residents at the artist’s invitation.
Shoes, boots, and sandals are arranged on the gallery floor as a single path — from everyday city life to a symbolic journey toward the sea. In the background, large projections of waves appear, and in the center, a glowing lantern acts as a beacon for “invisible travelers.” Each pair of shoes marks someone’s life and destiny, collectively forming a visual “archive” of human stories.
The installation is complemented by sound: in the semi-dark space, prayer texts and the names of God in Greek and Arabic are heard, highlighting a dialogue of cultures and religions. The project addresses themes of memory, migration, racism, and division, offering art as a language of reconciliation and understanding.
Organizers note that “Human Traces IV” invites visitors to view Cyprus through the stories of its residents, not just through the usual postcards of the sea and ancient monuments.
